Researchers at IBM use atoms for storage

The technology may years away from any viable application, but the fact the researchers at IBM claim to have made some significant discoveries in using atoms and molecules in the field of technology, has to be one of the most interesting developments for some time.

What this could mean for the consuming public is that because these are so small, and if they can be manipulated so that data can be stored magnetically, this would mean that any small device like a mobile phone or iPod could have the capacity to store something like 30,000 feature length films, now that is something to get excited about.

This type of research could herald in a new era of smaller yet more powerful devices.
